THE DOCTOR AND THE SHEIKHS' DEBATE
Page 82
Sh: This teaches you theology and knowledge about yourself. God is greatest! God is greatest!
Dr: Please look at this Sahifa Sajjadiya. Look at the supplications in them. Just look at this part of the supplications named: "Makarem al-Akhlaq"

Sh: Doctor is this supplication or Psychology? Truly God knows where to place his words. These supplications are like oceans of cognition. Doctor, may I take this book of Mafatih and Sahifa Sajjadiya?
Dr: Sure you can take them however please pay attention to one thing and that is Sahifa Sajjadiya contains many interesting and good supplications but in the Mafatih there is a chance that you come upon cases that people have never even once read in their entire lifetime. And these supplications might not be your taste and you may not like them. Therefore, I suggest you take the selected version of the book of Mafatih which would be more suited for you.
Sh: But I wish to view all of the supplications.
Dr: With knowing that you have limited of time it would be ideal to take the selected book of the supplication.
There are No Imprecations upon the Caliphas
Sh: These supplications that you showed me are indication of speaking to God, but I have heard that in the book of Mafatih there are imprecations towards to the Caliphas and cursing towards them too.
D: Is that why you wanted to take this book away with you?
Sh: No, No, But do you have any explanation about that?
Dr: Yes, Firstly we do not have direct imprecations towards any Caliphas unless those that was cursed by the Calipha themselves.
Sh: That must class Muawiyah as Ali had cursed him.
Dr: Yes and unfortunately this had become a common doing as based on the history cited, once a congregational Imam forgot to curse imprecate Ali and once he remembered he stopped in the middle of his way and instead sent 100 imprecations towards him and where he stood was later made as a Mosque. It is a Mosque for imprecations. Therefore, cursing Muawiyah is commonly known and is being done as he called for the Caliphas to be done so. We also have one thing from all the Muawiyah's sayings and that is to imprecate him as that was his own wish. I have to add that those whom killed the Prophet's daughter and martyred her as are also among the people whom are cursed.
Sh: But they have said: they have also imprecated the Calipha too.
Dr: There is a part where they might have thought that it was referred to them but it isn't. That is the supplication for Ashura that says:
"ﺍﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﻭﺁﻝ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺣﻖ ﻇﻠﻢ ﻇﺎﻟﻢ ﺍﻭﻝ ﺍﻟﻌﻦ "
Page 84
"Then the second, third and forth are mentioned and then Yazid is named. Some say that the three named are the three Caliphas and the fourth is Muawiyah."
Sh: Well this is really bad to insult the Caliphas that are honorable and respected by Muslims.
Dr: The imprecation on the Caliphas was done by Muawiyah not us.
Sh: Well everyone knows this to be false. No one names their son after Muawiyah.
Dr: This is completely correct and that's why we do not curse the Caliphas.
Sh: So what is meant but the first, second and third then?
Dr: We do not know who are meant for in particular even although based on many of the scholars opinions this part accompanying the part where the blessings are sent before that is deemed to be not as part of the original supplication.
Sh: Then how come has it been written in this book.
Dr: The versions of supplications are different. The book of Mafatih has brought the latest of the versions.
Sh: Then why do you write them up and recite them?
Dr: Because it doesn't say whom. It is not clear who is meant by them. What difference does it make if we say that it is meant for the first Calipha and then Forth for Muawiyah? We are cursing him in open there is no reason why should we do that in hidden. But this passage has been added regarding people that did injustice to the Ahl al Bayt.
Sh: They should remove it from the Supplications to prevent sensitiveness towards the matter.
Dr: I am not in charge of publishing for the country but the question remains how come Muawiyah was able to curse Ali and that was not removed even though his imprecation was in daylight, clear and in public.
Sh: We say that Muawiyah made a mistake and that is about the past.
Dr: Very well, let's discuss the current situation. Please stop the police around Masjid Al Haram and around the Prophet's shrine that are naming Muslims in specific the Shias as infidels in the open. Whenever they stop openly calling us infidels then we will advise them to not read these passages loudly.
Sh: These things are not under my control.
Page 85
Dr: Are the authority of the publishers under my control so that I could ask them to remove this part of the book that is not even clear to be insulting anyone in particular or are people under my control to ask of them not to read it?
Sh: Then we are both the same in being unable to prevent people from doing these things.
Dr: Yes, but there is one difference and that is this. You are unable to prevent something that is publicly unlawful and that is to call a Muslim to be an infidel but I am unable in preventing a matter that is unclear to be of any sin.
Sh: But let me make something known regarding Shias being any different to other Muslims.
This is what the Wahabis are doing in the Islamic world and it is not a representative of what other religious schools believe in or follow. By the way it is getting late and I need to leave.
Which book shall I take in the end?
Dr: Take the Sahifa Sajjadiya and the selected version of the Mafatih Al Jinan so there is no sensitiveness in the hotel you are staying at. If there is no doubt in raising any sensitiveness then you can take the full book if you wish.
Sh: Very well, then God willing I will see you after the Zuhr prayer tomorrow and we will go to my hotel.
Dr: Don't you think that here is much more convenient? This is because I have this application on my mobile and I will not be causing the rest of the travelers any sensitiveness. The other reason is if we sit and discuss there they might want to intrude and involve themselves in our discussion as they are Arabs and know how to speak Arabic.
Sh: But this way I would be a burden on you every day.
Dr: We have an expression in Farsi that we say we are not a burden you are a delight.
Sh: Then we shall meet again tomorrow after the Zuhr's prayer in front of the Door of Gabriel.
Dr: Good willing.
Sheikh left taking with him some pistachio, Persian sweets and the two books. I began to get ready to sleep before the Maghrib prayer. Although Mr Karbalyi and Ghargham were back from the shrine and were hardly going to let me do that.
After resting for a while, I got ready for the Maghrib prayer. I went to the mosque. Sheikh was sitting with a distance from me. I rose to read the pilgrimage for the Prophet as I faced towards the chamber an officer came close to me and said, Close the book, stand towards the Qibla and not the chamber. I replied, I am doing this based on Ahmad and Malik and Shafia Fatwa's (order). The officer said: They do not say this. I replied, yes, they do. The book of Ibn Taymiyyah (Which is the gathering of all Fatwas) has even sited it. He replied you are a liar.
Page 86
There is no such thing. I replied you are mistaken because I have proof. He said it does not exist.
He began cursing and imprecating me. At this moment, Sheikh Ibrahim rose and said, this person is telling the truth. The officer said: Where are you from? Sheikh replied, From Egypt. The officer said: Have you seen it with your own eyes stating that you can pray facing the chamber?
Sheikh replied, Yes, I have seen it myself. The Officer said, but they have told us to do such a thing is not allowed. This is a government order. Sheikh replied, yes, but there is no need to accuse someone of falsehood. It is allowed to read the Prophet's prayer while facing his shrine. I thanked the Sheikh and prepared myself to pray for the Maghrib prayer.
After the Maghrib prayer I met a religious student from Oman and we started talking. The student was from School of Medina. He said: What are you reading? I replied: I am reading the supplications after the pray. He said: What are they? I responded: Firstly chanting and then the supplications that are read after the pray. He asked: What do you say after the pray? I said:
Firstly we do chanting : 34 times God is greatest, 33 times Praise to God, 33 times Hallelujah (ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻥ ﺍﷲ , ,ﺍﻟﺤﻤﺪﺍﷲ ﺍﷲ ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻥ )and then I read various supplications for instance after the morning prayer we read:
ِ ﺁﻟِﻪ ﻭَ ﻣُﺤَﻤﱠﺪٍ ﻋَﻠَﻰ ﺍﻟﻠﱠﻪُ ﺻَﻠﱠﻲ ﻭَ ﺍﻟﻠﱠﻪِ ﺑِﺴْﻢِ

The religious student said: So they say that you praise Ali to be higher than they praise the Lord but here there is nothing of that at all. I replied there are many of these sayings.
The religious student seemed gob smacked. He asked if I could give him the book of supplication. I answered: Unfortunately, I only have one copy of this and need it until I finish my Hajj pilgrimage. Nevertheless, I can copy some of the parts for you and bring it. He thanked me and the Isha prayer started. Unfortunately, I never saw the student ever again.

Day Twenty Third of Zyqadeh
As usual I went to Baqi's graveyard after the morning pray. Afterwards I went back to the hotel, had some breakfast and then slept for a while. I went to the Mosque for the Zuhr prayer. After reading the Zuhr pray Mr Haj Abbas that had accompanied me waited for the Sheikh. The Shrine police told us to move as it was getting crowded. Eventually we moved around so many times until we managed to see Sheikh and we headed towards the hotel.
Sh: The weather is really good. It isn't that warm and God willing it will stay that way for Arafa and Mena.
Dr: God willing it will stay that way however, if it rains it would not seem that it would get any better.
Sh: By the way did you get into any trouble last night?
Dr: With you coming into my defence there wasn’t any problems. But if you were not there I would have most definitely be taken into custody of Masjid an Nabawi.
Sh: I think they only warn as I don’t believe they have a specific place to keep anybody.
Dr: That is not true. Last night one of my colleagues was taking photos of his family outside of the Shrine and while he was taking the photo a woman passes by, in front of him. Her face also got captured in the photo. They took the poor photographer and they were going to cut all of his hair off. I went and mediated and eventually they took a written promise from him that he will never take a photo of an unlawful woman again. We were there for four hours. The interesting part was here that the officer that was also witness to what had happened and had reported the issue was trying to release him. (Because I swore that he was not lying about taking the photo of the woman). But the officer higher ranked than him would not accept.
Sh: It was not the photographers fault. Did the woman of whom the photo was accidently taken make any complaints?
Dr: No, she didn’t make any complaint but the officer that saw this happen complained.
Sh: For what excuse did they arrest him for?
Dr: Because he took a photo off a woman that was not lawfully his.
Sh: God help us with these extremists.
Dr: You think this is big? These men consider everyone as infidels and polytheist.
Sh: We seek refuge in God ( ﺑﺎﷲeven ,)ﻧﻌﻮﺫ if Ibn Teymiyah was here he wouldn’t have behaved this way.
Page 89
Dr: I believe these men are his students because these doings come from his book.
Sh: But acting on them and actually calling them infidels and polytheist is not right.
Dr: Normally ignorant followers act worse than their own kind.
Sh: Yes, that is correct.
Dr: For instance Ibn Teymiyah who considers himself as one of Ahmad Hanbal's followers is against several of Fatwa's that Ahmad Hanbal has said: himself. This is done in a way that even his own brothers started being against him. Most of his Fatwa's were against the majority of the four Imams (Malik, Ahmad, Shafia, Abu Hanifah).
Sh: Yes, there were many objections towards him, but he also did innovate many new things.
Dr: In religion normally innovations are mostly troublesome rather than reinforcement for religion.
At this point we arrived at the hotel. We had lunch and on that day some of my hometown people had come to see me from Jahrom. I thanked them and requested Sheikh to eat at the table by my hometown people. He accepted and we ended up having many various conversations. Luckily they talked about their childhood memories and high school experiences in specific their Quran citing classes that happened every night. They left us after lunch and we headed towards my room so we could start our debate. We had some tea and Persian sweets and then began.
Continuation of Supplication in Shia'sm
Sh: Last night I read the supplications in the book. It was very interesting to me. I have bookmarked some of the pages. I have brought the book with me. Please have a look at these passages. I am not sure if you have paid as much attention to these parts like the other ones you were mentioning yesterday. For instance, this is supplication that is the Sunday supplication.
Dr: Yes, it is very interesting.
Sh: By the way, how do they come up with the names of the supplications.
Dr: The name of the supplications does not have a substantial important base. Sometimes they come after the name of the people that said: the supplication or has taught them the supplication.
For instance, Kumail or Abu Hamza Thumali is another example. Some of them are based from the name of the day for instance the Morning supplication that is for the mornings. Some of the names come from the content of which it was for. An example for that are Makarem Al Akhlagh and Aliya Al Mazamin. Some of the supplications have been named based on the first word that the Supplication starts with for instance Iftitah supplication or the Sabah supplication like we saw just before. Some of the supplications names have been set officially. But their names whether it is official or not is not important. What is important is the content of them.
Page 90
Sh: That is correct but I wanted to focus today's debate on the supplications that clarify the relationship of man with God. From one side a person gets fearful and from the other side gets closer to God and feels more hopeful.
Dr: I agree as well. Let's talk about the supplications.
Sh: Firstly the supplications that are referring to the days of the week. Can we have a look at Sunday and Tuesday supplication? This is the Sunday supplication. Please look at the first part of the supplication.
ُ ﻋَﺪْﻟَﻪ ﺇِﻻﱠ ﺃَﺧْﺸَﻰ ﻻَ ﻭَ ﻓَﻀْﻠَﻪُ ﺇِﻻﱠ ﺃَﺭْﺟُﻮ ﻻَ ﺍﻟﱠﺬِﻱ ﺍﻟﻠﱠﻪِ ﺑِﺴْﻢِ

"From You do I desire for the garment of wellbeing and its completion"
Sh: If a person only reads this once a week he will have cleansed his soul so well with it and from so many prospective: Firstly, God will be his only reliance. After all the badness, and cruelty, even Satan seeks help from God and then requests to be at his service and asks for his forgiveness and in the end asks God for a brighter future.
Page 91
Dr: Most of the supplications that have come to us have really perfect content.
Sh: Please have a look at Tuesday's supplication.
