THE DOCTOR AND THE SHEIKHS' DEBATE

"Make life an increase for me in every good, and death an ease for me from every evil!"

"And upon his Household, the good, the pure, and upon his Companions, the distinguished"

Sh: Why does it say to send praise to the distinguished chosen by the Prophet?

Dr: Due to the same reason we came to a conclusion on the fact that not all of the Prophets followers were worth blessing. So we only praise the ones that are good.

Sh: This is interesting, I will praise the ones that are chosen too.

Dr: Just like I said: yesterday, Imam Khomeini recommended before the revolution to read this supplication every day.

Sh: God bless his soul. He was very right because it starts with praising the lord and then it talks about ones soul and selflessness and then it seeks refuge to God. It asks to be a soldier of his group and to be his friend as they are the ones that are successful, with no fear and are prosperous. This is a great supplication for fighters in the path of the Lord.

Dr: Whenever I feel down and not worthy I read this supplication.

Sh: This one is also very interesting to me:

Dr: This supplication is regarding the awaited Mahdi.

Sh: But it is a crucial supplication. It clarifies everyone's duty based on their position. The supplication for the month of Rajab was interesting as well:

On the other hand, this part of the supplication that is specified for the month of Shaban:

My Lord, I have taken refuge in You. Therefore do not disappoint me of Your Mercy and do not keep me secluded from Your Kindness.

My Lord, place me among Your friends in the position of one who hopes for an increase in Your love.

My Lord, inspire me with a passionate love of remembering You so that I may keep on remembering You, and by Your Holy Name and Pure Position cherish my cheerful determination into a success.

My Lord, I invoke You to admit me to the place reserved for those who obey You, and to attach me to the nice abode of those who enjoy Your good pleasure. . . I can neither defend myself nor do I control what is advantageous for me.

My Lord, I am Your powerless sinning slave and Your repentant bondman. So do not make me one of those from whom You turn away Your face, and whom his negligence has

secluded from Your forgiveness.

My Lord, grant me complete severance of my relations with everything else and total submission to You. Enlighten the eyes of our hearts with the light of their looking at You to the extent that they penetrate the veils of light and reach the Source of Grandeur, and let our souls get suspended by the glory of Your sanctity.

My Lord, make me one of those whom You call and they respond; when You look at and they are thunderstruck by Your majesty. You whisper to them secretly and they work for You openly."

Dr: Dear Sheikh, are you a gemologist?

Sh: How come?

Dr: Imam Khomeini has mentioned this part of the supplication that is regarding Shaban several times. It is as part of a supplication that has concepts that it is very hard to understand. For instance, what does "Thunderstruck by Your majesty" mean?

Sh: Actually, I was about to ask you regarding some of the meaning of these supplications.

Dr: We should be asking you.

Sh: When Imam Khomeini is contemplating on them who am I to say anything?

Dr: Then my position in this matter is quite clear my field is in Mechanics.

Sh: This supplication called Iftitah is also interesting. Especially the beginning of it:

"O Allah, I begin the glorification with praise of Thee; Thou, from Thy bounties, gives out freely the truth and salvation; I know for certain that Thou art the most merciful in disposition of forgiveness and mercy, [but] very exacting at the time of giving exemplary punishment and chastisement to wrongdoers, the Omnipotent in the domain of absolute power and might.

O Allah, Thou has given me permission to invoke Thee and beseech Thee, so listen, O Hearer, to my words of praise, and give a favourable reply to my supplication, and minimize my falling into misery, O the often-forgiving.

O my Allah, many a trouble Thou hath removed; many a sorrow hath Thou dispelled;

many a misery hath Thou mitigated; and at all times Thou spread out mercy, and cut short the tightening circles of misfortunes.

All praise be to Allah, Who has not taken unto Himself a wife, nor a son, and Who has no partner in sovereignty, nor any protecting friend through dependence. Magnify Him with all magnificence.

All praise be to Allah, with full gratitude for all his bounties.

All praise be to Allah, Who has no opposition to His rule, nor any challenge to His commands.

All praise be to Allah, Who has no counsel to meddle with His operation of creation, nor is there anything similar to Him in His greatness."3

Dr: This is very good. It clarifies that supplication has a highly regarded place for the Ahl al Bayt. It is a teaching and also a request for being thankful. For example in the supplication of Kumeyl firstly, it introduced God so we would know whom we have come to. God's mercy, power, and forgiveness and ...then it introduces itself with how he has sinned and then asks for mercy from all the sins he has made and it seems that his sins were forgiven by the end of the supplication. God wished to place him close to the other men he has chosen beside himself.

Sh: It was very interesting, I had not paid attention to it in that way.

Sh: In my opinion in this supplication it teaches what you mentioned before. At the beginning it starts thanking the Lord for the blessings he has given and then asks for the things he wants.

3-Abbas Qummi

Page 98

Dr: Almost all of the supplications are this way.

Sh: The supplication for the Mujeer is also describing the Lord's beauty however, mentioning them this way is very appealing.

Dr: Until the end of this supplication it is just the same. It is all regarding begging God and for him to save us from his fire.

Sh: These supplications are oceans of theology. It is very good for the youth to read in this era of inappropriate vulgar culture. They can get to know God better and to rely on a source that is never going away. However if the Sunnis see these supplications they would be amazed. They

Page 99

will be amazed of how you see your Lord's greatness and the way you express him has no replacement to how you feel about your Imams.

Dr: The supplication for Jawshan Kabir is the same way.

Sh: Yes, I have bookmarked it, please look.

Dr: This supplication has an interesting beginning. Please have a look. It is from Hazrat Seyed Al Sajidin that has cited this from his great grandfather The Messenger of God (s.a.w.a). This supplication was brought by Gabriel to the Prophet (s.a.w.a) regarding a blister that was on the Prophet's body from carrying heavy loads. It was hurting him so Gabriel was sent to him telling him: God sends his blessing and says that you can open the blister and read this supplication and he will protect you and your Ummah. The initial part of the supplication goes like this:

Sh: There is a part in the supplication of Jawshan where you repeat for one hundred times repeating: "", after every sentence. This part is so holy that it acquaints the soul of any person that reads this supplication and pays attention to its meaning in so many ways. It allows a person to see the face of the names and attributes of God and it enables the person to return to God, the

one that is the greatest, so he can be protected from the destructing fires of this world and the fires of his sins in the next world.

Dr: Did you read the Jawshan?

Sh: I reviewed all of it.

Dr: What about the rest of the supplication?

Sh: I will be honest with you. I spent the whole night reading these supplications until it was dawn. I read the Morning Prayer and then I slept until it was close to Zuhr prayer.

Dr: I wish I had given you these supplications sooner.

Sh: Actually these supplications are very important in introducing real Shi'ism and the Ahl al Bayt.

Dr: I think that based on these supplications you have a better understanding of where God, the Prophet, Ali and the rest of the Ahl al Bayt are placed.

Sh: If I am honest, your God is much more of a God than ours is. This is because some things are mentioned in the Sihah al Sittah but we have no feasibility in determining where it has come from but to say that we do not have a correct chain of transmission.

Dr: Yes, I have also seen that. For instance compare the God that wrestles with Moses in Bukhari and Sahih Muslem with the same attributes of God that Jawshan or supplication of Mujeer describes.

Sh: That is correct, you are right. If you agree lets pray here for Asir so we would have more time to discuss the supplications.

Dr: I would be happy to be of any service.

Sh: Okay, let's have a look at the supplication of Khams Ashar, especially this part where it is the supplication of Moteein Lelah (people that obey God):
