THE DOCTOR AND THE SHEIKHS' DEBATE
Page 243
Dr: It is a little different to the rituals of our debates.
Sh: What difference?
Dr: I wish to ask of you to read a section from a credible source taken from the School of Ahl al Bayt just for additional information so then no one could say that the Prophet gathered people for three days in Ghadir Khumm and just mentioned several short sentences. We can then have a much broader discussion tomorrow night.
Sh: What Hadith from what source are you referring to?
Dr: The Prophet's speech in Hajatal Veda that was read in Ghadir Khumm.
Sh: Very well. Let me have it and I will read it for tomorrow. (Appendix 3 with translation)
Sh Usman: Doctor could you please also give us the sources for it.
Dr: The speech has been cited from someone that is acceptable to you and his name is mentioned in several of your chains of transmissions.
Sh: Who are we talking about?
Dr: Muhammad Ibn Ali Albaqer.
Sh Usman: Yes, yes you are right. His name is mentioned many times in our credible Hadith's.
Sh: That is very good.
Dr: I have to add that we have the same Hadith from Zeyd Ibn Arqam and also someone else named Haziqahte ibn Yamaan.
I mean to say that there are three chains of transmissions that are all the same and have been mentioned in this book.
Sh: This is very interesting please allow me to also have a look at its chain of transmissions.
Dr: Here you go. These are all of the chains of transmissions for it. Two of the chains of transmissions are related to Muhammad Ibn Ali and two of the other chains of transmissions are related to Zeyd Ibn Arqam and Namaan.
Imam Baqer's saying has two chains of transmissions:

Day Seventeenth of Zihajjah (Eid Ghadir Night)
After the Maghrib and Isha prayer the Sheikh and Doctor Zohair and I returned to my hotel.
Upon entering the hotel we had dinner together. The tour group leader had arranged a celebrating ceremony for Eid Ghadir at the restaurant. They had placed many Persian sweets for all of the pilgrims on large trays and you could hear clapping and loud voices coming from the restaurant.
Sh: Is there an event at the hotel?
Dr: Yes, it is the night of the Eid Ghadir celebration.
Sh: Then it is good that we came here.
Dr: Please come with me. Let us have dinner and then we can celebrate.
Sh: We don't need dinner. These sweets and fruits are sufficient.
Dr Zohair: I wish to have dinner. If Sheikh Ibrahim does not wish to have any that is fine he does not have to eat.
Sh Usman: How can one let go of these delicious foods.
Sh: Alright then I will eat too.
Dr: Then let us go and take the seats over there where dinner hasn't been served yet.
After we had dinner and participated in the ceremony we had some Persian sweets and fruits and then headed towards my room for the continuation of our discussion.
Sh: We saw many new Persian sweets tonight.
Dr: Yes, they are for the pilgrims and therefore have more variety.
Sh: It is late. Let's start the Ghadir discussion.
8- Ghadir Khumm
Sh: We have time. It would be good if you would tell us. But do remember that at the first of our discussion you eliminated the companions and then you invalidated Abu Huraira's truth in his chain of transmissions and now it is the Caliphates turn. I now know why you would not discuss this issue and would always say let us leave it to the end.
Dr: Well inevitably the debate between the School of Ahl al Bayt and our Sunni brothers is an important thing.
Sh: Well I agreed to listen to what you had to say and until now everything you have said, has been right and logical. So I have accepted it.
Page 246
Dr: Thank you. This only shows your will to seek the truth and your greatness or else I am no one special. I have only extracted information from your own books.
Dr: Very well, we now come to the point where we talk about our last chapter of our debate, Ghadir Khumm.
Sh: Are you going to cite the story of what happens or are we going to exchange knowledge.
Dr: No, I believe we should mention the event at Ghadir with all of its sidelines so we can understand the intention of the Prophet for his speech at Ghadir Khumm.
Sh: Let us start.
Dr: In your books many parts of the Ghadir has been eliminated. What I mean to say is that the speech at Ghadir has been minimised and it is only in a couple of sentences. I will talk about the sideline of what happened because it will not have any effect on our debate I will bring the chain of transmissions from the School of Ahl al Bayt. We will use your books for discussing the main speech of Ghadir.
Sh: Doctor I have read the speech and have questions about it.
Dr: Very well but I wish to point out some things first.
Sh: Please go ahead.
Dr: You do know that the event of Ghadir happened at the Prophet's Hajat Al Veda (The Farewell Pilgrimage).
Sh: Yes, that is right.
Dr: You do know that Surat Al Maidah is the last Surat in the Quran.
Sh: Yes.
Dr: The verse of Ghadir is in Surat Al Maidah. Even though many interpreters state that this Surat came to the Prophet three times in Mena and once on the way to Mecca but, let's just pretend it came to him once.
Sh: Which verse?
Dr: Verse number 67:
Page 247
"O Messenger, Proclaim the message that has been sent down to you from your Creator and Nurturer! And if you do not do so then you would not have conveyed your duty as Allah's Messenger [know that] Allah will protect you from [The mischievous] people, Verily, Allah does not guide the disbelievers"
Sh: Yes, this was mentioned in Hajat Al Veda.
Dr: What do you think came to the Prophet and he was scared of telling them about it?
Sh: There are many debates in our books but to be honest the truth is that most say it had nothing to do with Ghadir.
Dr: Yes, I have seen them as well. Some say that this verse was not revealed to the Prophet in Ghadir and some say that if it did reveal to him it only meant that the Prophet was asking us to like Ali.
Sh: That is correct. There are other things said as well but it's been mostly about the same thing you mentioned.
Dr: Do you think that this event was so important that if the Prophet had not done so then he had not accomplished his duty as a Messenger?
Sh: The history says such a thing but to be honest it is a little heavy.
Dr: I can make a logical analysis by just using your own chain of transmissions.
Sh: Please do so, that would make us happy.
Dr: By looking at these Hadith's it can be easily concluded how important Ali was that if the Prophet had not put across the necessity of liking him to his Ummah then his job as a Messenger would have not been completed.
Sh Usman: Do you accept the interpretation of the word, Vali (Master), to be being friends or liking someone?
Dr: Do you accept that the meaning of the verse in the Quran is regarding liking Ali?
Page 248
Sh: Yes, many of our interpreters accept this but they do not accept the word Vali (Master) to be translated as Calipha.
Dr: I do not accept such an interpretation however, I do say that this event is being made to tell us to like Ali and was so important to God that he asked the Prophet to do that or else his job was not completed as a Prophet. It just goes to show how important this person was for him to arrange such an event.
Sh: Yes, that is important. It must have been an important piece of news.
Dr: Then such a person that God and his Prophet value him this much should have been Calipha after the Prophet not someone else.
Sh: In the end you will bring Ali as Calipha out of this Ghadir.
Dr: I won't do such a thing it is God and his Prophet. I am busy trying to dust away all of the uncertainty that history has brought upon this event.
Sh: Okay let us return to the main case. Let us debate Ghadir from your perspective.
Dr: I believe that God and his Prophet intended to bring about a more important event than just telling us to like Ali. This important case unfortunately was eradicated by falsifications in your books of interpretations. There are some books that still state the intention of this event was for appointing a Calipha and a successor and that the Prophet had such an objective.
Sh: But there are no declarations in Quran.
Dr: You are right but we should examine what the Prophet did immediately after the Verse was given to him.
Sh: What did he do?
Dr: After Ghadir when he was a couple of kilometers away from Jahfe, the Prophet gathered all the pilgrims passing by and told them to stay, then asked the ones that had left to return also to wait as he had an important announcement to make.
Sh: This is stated in our books.
Dr: Yes it is and I have seen it too.
Sh: Very well, you may carry on.
Dr: At Ghadir there was a lake named Khumm that had water. The Prophet had stopped the Caravan close to the lake of water and had stayed there for three days. He made a stand, out of the camel's apparatus positioned between two trees and under the shade. The Prophet prayed
Page 249
with the people and then made a complete intensive speech which is written in the book I gave you to read last night.
Sh: I read that book. Do you wish to discuss it now or later?
Dr: No, we will discuss it later.
Sh: Very well.
Dr: Okay, let us completely agree that Ghadir did happen and there were things that the Prophet talked about.
Sh Usman: We accept this.
Dr Zohair: Let us be informed because much of this information has never been heard by me.
Sh: That is not a problem. Please tell us so Dr Zohair can also know about them.
Dr: Whatever I will mention is from your own books and I will mention the summary of it from Nesaei. You all know that the chains of transmission are unanimously agreed upon.
Sh: Nesaei is one of our famous transmitters of traditions.
Dr: Here you go. This is the book of Khasais Nesaei and these Hadith's are just like before, numbered.
The Prophet's Remark: Whoever I am his Master, Ali is his Master

"Abi Tofeyl says from Zeyd Ibn Arqam: When the Prophet was returning from Hajat Al Veda he stopped at Ghadir Khumm. The Prophet ordered for the luggage's to be put down and for the camels to be rested. They placed several big trees on the ground creating a stand and he stood over it and then said: It appears that God wishes for me to return to him and I have accepted (I am to die). I am leaving you two great sources amongst you and
Page 250
one of them is bigger than the other. One is the book of God and the other is my descendants and my Ahl al Bayt. So be careful with how you treat them after me because these two are inseparable until they return to me at Basin of Katthar.
He then said: Henceforth God is my Master and I am the master of all believers. He then held Ali's hand and said: Whoever accepts me as his master, Ali is his Master. O Allah, like whoever that like him and be the enemy of whomever that is his enemy.
I asked Zeyd: Did you hear this from the Prophet?
He replied: There was no one in the Caravan that did not hear him or to see this happen."

O Allah, like whoever that likes him, and be against those who are his enemies. Six people rose from the other side of the pulpit and testified that they heard what the Prophet said.
Sharik said that he told Abi Eshaq: Did you hear what Bara Ibn Azeb said: about the Prophet's doing? He replied: Yes."

"Amer Ibn Vaeleh said: Ali gathered people in Rahbeh and said: to them: I swear you people to God every Muslim Man has heard what the Prophet has said. Do you not know that I possess priority over any other believer than themselves? The Prophet was standing and held Ali's hand and then said: Whoever accepts me as his master, Ali is his Master. O Allah, please be favouring to those who are his friends, and be against those who are his enemies.
Abu Al Tofeyl said: So I left there and thought to myself that I saw Zeyd Ibn Arqam and he told me this and said: Don't you believe me? I heard this thing straight from the Prophet and Abu Davoud foresaw it."

"Sa'ad said: The Messenger of God held Ali's hand and gave a speech and then he praised the Lord and then said: Do you not know that I possess more priority than yourself? They replied: You are right, O Messenger of God. He then held Ali's hand and raised it. He then said: Whoever accepts me as his master, Ali is his Master. Here forth Allah loves whoever loves him and is enemy to whoever classes him as an enemy."
